Meghan Hessman, the owner of Sunflower Follies Art Studio, is a local artist here in Salina, KS. She works primarily with watercolor and acrylic to create anything from garden inspired paintings to cityscapes, reimagined dinosaurs, whimsical pet portraits, animated insects and even silly animals - hence the follies! Many of her original paintings and prints are donated to local charity fundraisers including the Lindsborg Chocolate Lovers Affair, KU Salina Student Medical Outreach, Love Chloe Gala, Theatre Salina, the Cardinal Foundation, and Salina Charities League. Recent collaborations with local organizations include The Land Institute and the Women's Charity League to create custom, commemorative art pieces.
Last year she started participating in First Fridays in Downtown Salina at the Prickly Pear, as well as offering Sunflower Watercolor Paint Parties, and selling greeting cards at Red Fern Booksellers. Her art is currently on display at T-Lo's and Rosie's Event Center on Main. She feels that it has been truly fulfilling to experience the love, support, and encouragement of this local community through each art endeavor.
Art continues to fill the walls of their home as her husband, Jake, also has a passion for drawing and the two even collaborate on some of the art pieces together. They feel that Salina has been a wonderful place to raise their two children and become immersed in the arts. They love touring the new murals and statues downtown, attending productions at Theatre Salina and the Stiefel Theatre, and picking up new pieces of their own at the Salina River Festival.
